Recreating Big Bang?

$10 Billion Science Project to Launch
AP
filed under: Science News, World News

GENEVA (Sept. 9) - Scientists will launch an experiment in a tunnel deep beneath the French-Swiss border Wednesday, hoping to find evidence of extra dimensions, invisible "dark matter," and an elusive particle called the."

And although leading physicists such as Stephen Hawking say the atom-smashing experiment will be absolutely safe, some skeptics fear the proton collisions could unleash microscopic black holes that would eventually doom the Earth.

The most powerful atom-smasher ever built will produce collisions of protons traveling at nearly the speed of light in the circular tunnel, giving off showers of particles that will provide more clues as to how everything in the universe is made.

In the $10 billion project — the most extensive physics experiment in history — the Large Hadron Collider will come ever closer to re-enacting the "big bang," the theory that a colossal explosion created the cosmos.

The project, organized by the 20 member nations of the European Organization for Nuclear Research — known by its French initials CERN — has attracted researchers of 80 nationalities. Some 1,200 are from the United States, an observer country that contributed $531 million.

The collider is designed to push the proton beam close to the speed of light, moving around the 17-mile tunnel at 11,000 times a second at full power. Ramping up to full power is probably a year away.

Smaller colliders have been used for decades to study the atom. Scientists once thought protons and neutrons were the smallest components of an atom's nucleus, but experiments have shown they were made of still smaller quarks and gluons, and that there were other forces and particles.

The CERN experiments could reveal more about "dark matter," antimatter and possibly hidden dimensions of space and time. It could also find evidence of the hypothetical particle — the — which is sometimes called the "God particle." It is believed to give mass to all other particles, and thus to matter that makes up the universe.

Interiority

The sex and drugs and kickbacks scandal currently breaking out at the Minerals Management Service of the Interior Department--which collects oil and gas royalties--suggests a culture of corruption breathtaking even by Bush administration standards. Take, the former program director of the royalty-in-kind program:

The report said that from April 2002 to June 2003, Mr. Smithimproperly used his position with the royalty program to help atechnical services firm seek deals with the same oil and gas companies. The services firm paid Mr. Smith more than $30,000 for asking the oilcompanies to hire it, the report said....

The report accuses Mr. Smith ofimproperly accepting gifts from the oil and gas industry, of engagingin sex with two subordinates, and of using cocaine that he purchasedfrom his secretary or her boyfriend several times a year between 2002and 2005. He sometimes asked for the drugs and received them in hisoffice during work hours, the report alleges.

The report alsosays that Mr. Smith lied to investigators about these and otherincidents, and that he urged the two women subordinates to mislead theinvestigators as well.

In discussions with investigators, the report said, Mr. Smithacknowledged buying cocaine from his secretary and having a sexualencounter with her at her home, but denied discussing drugs at work. Healso denied telling anyone to lie, saying that he only told people that“no one has a right to know what I do on my personal time.”

And this is one of the officials the Justice Department isn't prosecuting. Read the whole thing.

No Time for Monuments

On Thursday, the nation will mark the opening of the country's firstmajor Sept.11 memorial with an evening ceremony at the Pentagon, where184 people died, not including the five men who hijacked AmericanAirlines Flight 77. (Washington Post)

This edifice is intended to honor and remember the Americans so unexpectedly murdered on that terrible day. Those who have caused it to be built are patriots; they love their country and its defenders. There is no doubt that they intended the to be a respectful and appropriate monument to those who died in the line of duty.

Unfortunately, it isn't. It's more of a slap in their face.

Let's think back to the previous time thousands of Americans were suddenly murdered on American soil: December 7, 1941, when, as President Roosevelt said to Congress the next day, "...a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan." 2,386 Americans died in the famous sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; some hundreds are still entombed in the wreck of the USS Arizona, whose explosion and sinking killed half of the victims that day. Today, there is a memorial built over the wreck with the names of the dead engraved on a marble wall of remembrance. All in all, the Arizona memorial appears quite similar in principle to the.

But there's an important difference. The purposes of a memorial of this sort are twofold: to remember the honored dead and to provide a sense of closure for the living. There's a time and a place for that; unfortunately, we are not there yet.

The USS Arizona Memorial was dedicated in 1962, long after the defeat of Imperial Japan. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the architect of the Pearl Harbor attack, was dead in combat, his transport shot down by American long-range fighters; Gen. Hideki Tojo was arrested and executed for war crimes; Japan was first occupied by U.S. forces and governed by Gen. Douglas MacArthur, then released under a new constitution and American-allied independent government. In short, all those responsible for the slaughter had paid the appropriate price, in combat or in court. Justice had been done; the time had come for closure.

What a contrast with 9-11! Obviously, the criminals most directly involved in 9-11 died at their own hands and stand before the highest Bar of Justice. But their leaders, their organizers, the men behind the villains - their cases are still open. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the so-called "mastermind of 9-11", is in U.S. custody, but his trial is far from completed, much less his payment made. Osama bin Laden himself is famously hiding somewhere, free and independent, gleefully plotting new atrocities. If 9-11 represents anything at all today, it is a catalog of unfinished business.

Would it have been appropriate to construct and dedicate the Arizona Memorial while the Marines were storming Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima? Of course not. Why, then, are we so concentrated on building memorials and monuments for the dead while their suffering goes unavenged and justice has not yet been served?

Terrorism will always be with us; it is not an enemy, but a tactic. The specific terrorists who attacked us on 9-11, however, are mortal men who can be made to pay the price. Until that has been done, we cannot achieve any sense of closure. A memorial implies that 9-11 is a part of history. It is not: it is an ongoing injustice that demands all our efforts to pursue. Only when Osama bin Laden has answered before a court, mortal or immortal, will 9-11 monuments and memorials be anything but a hollow mockery and a sorry sham.

Is our sense of reality so debased that we accept a phony feel-good closure, so as to make us less inclined to pursue the real thing?

Wait for the iTunes download soon. MP3 will be available soon in Amazon.

Lyrics:

Im not lovin you, the way I wanted to
What I had to do, had to run from you
Im in love with you, but the vibe is wrong
And that haunted me, all the way home
So ya never know, never never know
Never know enough, til its over love
Til we lose control, system overload
Screamin no no no, no no
I aint lovin you, the way I wanted to
See I wanna move, but cant escape from you
So I keep it low, keep a secret code
So everybody else dont have to know

So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
You keep ya love locked down, you lose

Im not lovin you, the way I wanted to
I cant keep my cool, so I keep it true
I got somethin to lose, so I gotta move
I cant keep myself, and still keep you too
So I keep in mind, when Im on my own
Somewhere far from home, In the danger zone
How many times did it take til I finally got through
you lose, you lose
I aint lovin you, the way I wanted to
See I had to go, see I had to go
No more wastein time, we cant wait for life
which is wastin time, wheres the finish line

So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
You keep ya love locked down, you lose

Im not lovin you, the way i wanted to
I met no one new, I got no one new
No I said im through, but got love for you
But im not lovin you, the way I wanted to
Gotta keep it goin, keep the lovin goin
Keep it on a roll, only god knows
Am I into you, baby im confused
You choose, you choose
I aint lovin you, the way I wanted to
Way I got to go, I dont need you
I been on this road, too many times before
I aint lovin you, the way I wanted to

So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, you lose
So keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, ya love locked down
If you keep ya love locked down, ya love locked down
Keepin ya love locked down, you lose

Friday McCain-McSame Bashing

I would write something here about McCain’s acceptance speech except that — I swear this is true — I literally fell asleep part way through it.

So sweet....

From: http://charlie43.livejournal.com/

A Life In The Times
As a writer and artist, I am much influenced by things that most normal people would have me committed for. My Irish grandparents instilled in me a love for the wee folk of the forest, and elves and fairies are much a part of my life. As a student of Seth, the entity channeled through Jane Roberts, I am open to all probable universes, and all parallel worlds.

I spent most of the summer in Anderson Indiana with my son and his wife, and found myself in a magical place. At night, long after the city slept, I sat in their back yard in the dark, trusty glass at hand, and my mind and body open to all that is. I watched the moon and planets rise from the east, transversing the night skies until the wolf hours of the morning. My mother, bless her ancient old soul, always said I had way too much imagination for one person, and maybe she was right about that. I, however, do not believe that is so, mainly because of life experiences I have had.

I digress - while sitting there in the dark one evening, I had an experience that I really prefer not to share, but let me say it was one of beauty and wonder. Out of that experience came the image of the darling little elven girl you see here. I have carried her with me in mind's eye for quite some time now, and have been driven to reproduce her. You see the results here. It is only a beginning. She has no name - at least not yet, anyway. I know she has a purpose for being revealed to me. My DIL Sara is pregnant, approaching third trimester. I like to think that this lovely little lady was revealed to me as the unborn child's protector in ways I cannot fathom. This new little granddaughter will be a special person to me, and she needs a special protector for other reasons I don't wish to reveal. Perhaps, in an old man's fancy, this lovely elven girl was revealed to me to let me know that things will be okay. Stranger things have happened in my life...

Peace,

Charlie~
