Casey Shakes Convention Attendees From Torpor With "Four More Months" Line

Sitting up in the nosebleed seats at the Democratic National Convention, one was struck by how utterly distracted the audience was for large stretches of Tuesday night's program. Of course the night ended well, with a boisterous address from Montana Governor and the roof-blowing finale from Sen. Hillary Clinton, though the crowd's attention was first engaged when Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, Jr. bent the familiar "four more years" line into "four more months," approximately (but not quite) the amount of time left in President Bush's final term.

The phrase shook the crowd from its collective torpor almost immediately. While other speakers tried to berate the crowd into chanting along with their would-be slogans, Casey's meme took off organically, with the speaker wanting to move on before the crowd did. And after Casey left the stage, the crowd attempted to take up the chant anew -- only to be pre-empted by the convention house band.

Presumably, someone running this show will allow convention attendees to chant it a few more times tomorrow.

Activist Del Martin dies

(right) with her wife, Phyllis Lyon

Sad news: LGBT rights activist has died.

Martin, who married her longtime partner Phyllis Lyon on the first day same-sex marriage was legal in California, co-founded (with Lyon) the first national lesbian rights organization, the Daughters of Bilitis in 1955.

Lyon released the following statement on Martin's death: "I am so lucky to have known her, loved her and been her partner in all things. I am devastated, but I take some solace in knowing we were able to enjoy the ultimate rite of love and commitment before she passed." (Emphasis mine)

This is incredibly sad, but what an amazing woman - and an amazing life!

Beijing Flash! August 23, 2008-Langat Wins Women's 1,500 meters, Rowbury takes seventh, by Larry Eder

In a thrilling 1,500 meters, the field stayed close through the first 400 meters, lead by Anna Alminva or Russia of the US was in fifth, with Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain, Nataliya Tobias of the Ukraine, Iryna Lishchynska of the Ukraine and Natial Rodgriguez in tow. Alminiva took the pack through the 800 meters in 2:13.70 and the race was still in doubt. Then, Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain, the Osaka champion took over and it looked like Jamal was going to take this one going away...there was just one little problem, no one gave the script to Nancy Jebet Langat.....

Jamal took the pack through 1200 meters in 3:16.41 and the race was on. LIshchynska and Tobias, along with are following Jamal. Lisa Dobriesky of Great Britian, who has been running so well recently is also in contention. Nancy Jebet Langat, who was also in the pack makes a move on Jamal around the turn, and takes the lead coming off the final turn. LIshchnska and Tobias are in full flight, and guess what? Jamal starts to falter, first to third, then fourth and finally fifth!

Nancy Jebet Langat of Kenya takes the gold in her personal best in 4:00.23! Iryna Lishchyska of the Ukraine takes the silver in 4:01.83. Natilya Tobias of the Ukraine takes the bronze in 4:01.78, a personal best. Barely holding on to the medal, Tobias was quite lucky that Lisa Dobriskey of Great Britain, running the last sixty meters like a bat out of hell, nearly caught the bronze medalist, but had to be comforted with her
personal best of 4:02.10 and fourth in the Olympic final.

Maryam Yusuf Jamal of Bahrain took fifth in 4:02.71. Natalia Rodriguez of Spain took sixth in 4:03.19, a seasonal best. In seventh of the US, who was in the race until 200 meters to go, when she started to falter and just did not have another gear, finished her first Olympic final in seventh in 4:03.58 after a long and amazing season!

Chris "Mad Dog" Russo rumored to be joining Sirius XM Radio

Mike and the Mad DogWFAN's popular "Mike and the Mad Dog" show lost the "Mad Dog" yesterday, when (pictured, left) departed the station abruptly, ending a 19-year partnership with Mike Francesa.

Russo quit the station in the early evening, leading WFAN to swiftly name Francesa the sole host of the popular afternoon drive-time show, starting immediately. For now, it will be called "Francesa on the FAN," and it signals the end of perhaps the most formidable duo in sports-talk radio.

"The idea that we hate each other and I had to get out, trust me, that's not true," Russo told The New York Times. "I'm 48 years old. It's time for a change, and I'm looking for a new challenge."

Russo added that he had no other jobs waiting for him. But that's not what industry sources are saying.

Newsday reports that he is likely to land at Sirius Satellite Radio for a lucrative deal worth up to $15 million over five years. And that would just yet another popular radio personality to Karmazin's roster of star talent.

"I have four or five options," Russo told Newsday. "Sirius would be one of them ... Obviously, I'm not stupid. I'm not going to leave FAN unless I have something relatively secure."

Mike and the Mad Dog are no more

Squawker Jon came by to see me at my desk yesterday to tell me the big news - that Chris (Mad Dog) Russo is leaving WFAN. I yelped “What???” when I heard the news,

Although Mad Dog denies that a deteriorating relationship with co-host Mike Francesa had anything to do with separating, not many people believe that.

It’s too bad that will be no more. And no matter how much money either of them make, they will never have as much power and influence solo as they did together.

I developed much more respect for FranDog, as Bob Raissman, calls them, after starting to write this blog, and especially after starting to appear on the radio. To be able to come up with interesting takes on sports that people will want to listen to for 5 1/2 hours a day is tougher than you think. And so is working in a partnership, as Squawker Jon and I can attest to! So hats off to them for what they have done so well, for so long.

But the thing is, hearing them each solo will never be as compelling listening. Anybody tuning in their show during the summer can attest to that. I always liked Dog better than Mike, though, simply because Chris is funnier, and Mike is too, well, pompous.

It’s a shame those two crazy kids couldn’t work it out, though. Oh well,

What do you think of? Leave us a comment!

What to watch tonight at Olympics: Beisel goes for medal

beisel0815.jpg

One way or another, Elizabeth Beisel's remarkable journey to Beijing will culminate tonight, when she swims in the finals of the 200-meter backstroke. Beisel, who had the second-fastest time in last night in the semifinals, will jump off at 10:03 a.m. (10:03 p.m. Eastern) -- it's the first of four swimming finals scheduled tonight.

Immediately after Beisel's event, Michael Phelps will go for his seventh gold medal in these Olympics, this time 100-meter butterfly. That will be followed by the finals of the women's 800-meter freestyle and the men's 50-meter freestyle.

Outside the pool tonight, there will be live coverage of elimination-round men's beach volleyball from 9 to 10, as Americans Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser take on Martin and Jan Schnider of Switzerland. There will also be live coverage of the preliminary non-beach volleyball match between the United States and China, which begins at 10.

You can catch all these events on NBC -- Cox Channel 10.

AMAZIAN OF THE WEEK! Raj Bhavsar

Name: Raj Bhavsar

Hails from: Houston, TX

Occupation: Olympic gymnast

Known for: Failing to make the U.S. Olympic Men's Gymnastics Team not once, but twice; being named an alternate for the 2004 Games in Athens and having to watch the men's team win silver from the stands; almost quitting the sport after that painful experience; being named an alternate this year, only to be promoted less than two weeks before the Olympics when Paul Hamm dropped out due to injuries; turning in solid performances in the qualifying round to help the men make the team finals, which will be held on Tuesday; sporting unreasonably big guns for such a small--5'3", 118 lbs.--dude.

Another reason to root for Raj? He's a native Houstoniasian. And the trippy thing about that is he's a product of the Cypress Academy of Gymnastics (like teammate), which is not only smack-dab in the middle of Jen's hometown, it's where she took gymnastics as a kid. Oh, and that's where she broke her hymen on the balance beam, too, but, uh, that's a story for another time. Go Raj! Reprzent!
