New West Side Story Cast Announced, Includes Actual Latinos!

west_side_story_10.29.jpgThe cast for the Broadway revival of West Side Story has been announced and Maria isn't going to be played by a gringa wearing a lot of bronzer! But she's still not actually Puerto Rican. Trivialities:
Heading the cast will be Matt Cavenaugh (A Catered Affair) as Tony, Karen Olivo (In the Heights) as Anita, Cody Green (Movin' Out) as Riff and George Akram ("Stuck on You") as Bernardo. Twenty-one-year-old Argentinean actress Josefina Scaglione, who created the role of Amber Von Tussle in the Argentinean production of Hairspray, will make her Broadway debut as Maria.
There aren't any super-talented Puerto Rican actresses who can sing, dance and act? We find that a little hard to believe. Anyway, we're still pretty excited for this. And we're still holding out hope that the singers don't roll every single "R" in every single sentence. Now, forrr yourrr viewing pleasurrrre, herrre's a snippet of some good old-fashioned culturrral ignorrrance frrrom the movie verrrsion of West Side Storrry: Ayayayay! Cavenaugh, Scaglione, Olivo, Green and Akram to Lead Cast of West Side Story Revival [Playbill]

Christian Science Monitor To Go 100% Online

One of the best newspapers in the world, the , announced Tuesday it would become the first leading newspaper to drop its daily print edition and, instead, to go 100% online.

CSM decided to go online completely after suffering losses in readership and, thus, advertising revenue.

It struggled financially for decades but, the paper which became 100 years old this year, realized it could not continue on the traveled path any longer. Instead, CSM will publish a print edition every weekend, and publish the rest of its stories online only.

Interesting about the is that while its print edition lost readership (down from 230,000 in 1970 to 50,000 in 2008) its online readership soared: it has approximately 5 million pageviews each month, compared to 4 million five years ago and 1 million a decade ago.

Although CSM is the first nationally circulated and greatly respected newspaper to publish its content online completely, and to drop the daily print edition, it is not the first time that it has led the way Internet-wise. Back in 1995, CSM was the first newspaper to go online generally, when one of its reporters was kidnapped in Bosnia. Now, in 2008, you can only read the newspaper online and in the weekends in print.

“Obviously, this is going to help with our costs, but it also enables us to put much more emphasis on the Web and basically put our reporting assets and our editorial assets where we think growth will be in a very tough industry in the future, which we think is the Web,” Editor John Yemma said.

Other newspapers and magazines are likely to follow in the coming years. Especially now that economies worldwide are in crisis, newspapers will lose readership with regards to their print editions. Online, however, readership is likely to continue to grow, for increasingly more people have Internet access and use it to be informed on what happens in their country and the rest of the world.

DNA Links Man To Murder Of Ashton Kutcher's Ex

LOS ANGELES — DNA evidence has linked an air conditioning repairman to the stabbing deaths of three women, including a former girlfriend of actor Ashton Kutcher, police said Friday.

Michael Gargiulo, 32, of Santa Monica has been in custody since July for a separate knife attack and could face murder charges as soon as next week, police said.

Santa Monica police Lt. Darrell Lowe said DNA collected from a crime scene last spring helped link Gargiulo to the stabbing deaths of women from Los Angeles, suburban Chicago and Monterey Park.

One of the cases involves 22-year-old, Kutcher's former girlfriend, who was found dead in February 2001 in her Hollywood Hills home.

Kutcher, who starred in the television series "That '70s Show" and is married to actress Demi Moore, told police he went to pick up the fashion student-model for a post-Grammy Awards party, but she did not answer the door. He checked a back window and spotted what he thought were red wine stains on the carpet and then left. Her body was discovered the next day by a friend.

Kutcher's agent, Stephanie Simon, said the actor had no comment.

Police said they have a DNA match that links Gargiulo to another fatal stabbing of a Monterey Park woman in 2005. They also suspect Gargiulo in the 1993 killing of a high school girl in the Chicago suburb of Glenview, where Gargiulo lived at the time. Tricia Pacaccio, a senior at Glenbrook South High School, was found stabbed to death on her front doorstep, clutching her door key.

Gargiulo was being held in lieu of $1.1 million bail on attempted murder and burglary charges stemming from the April 28 stabbing of a Santa Monica woman in her home, Lowe said. Detectives matched a DNA sample taken from blood at the crime scene to Gargiulo. Lowe said further database cross-referencing found that Gargiulio's DNA matched genetic evidence in the three killings.

Gargiulo's attorney, Anthony Salerno, said his client denies involvement in any of the attacks and "thinks the police are out to get him."

Salerno acknowledged Gargiulo will possibly be charged with murder for the three slayings. He said that Gargiulo lived near the four victims at the time of the attacks and a garment of his was found in one of the victims' homes. But, he said, that does not make Gargiulo guilty.

Salerno said he was not aware of any DNA matches in the three killings and questioned why police have taken so long to charge Gargiulo. "If there is any DNA evidence, that would be a surprise to me," he said.

He said Gargiulo has pleaded not guilty to the attempted murder and burglary charges from April and is scheduled for a pretrial hearing Sept. 4.

When asked about the Pacaccio case, John Gorman, a spokesman for the Cook County (Ill.) state's attorney's office, said he could not talk about an open investigation. "I can't comment on any evidence that may be out there," he said.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles police are using DNA evidence to track down another suspected serial killer in Southern California. A special police task force has linked the fatal shootings of 10 black women prostitutes and one black man in South Los Angeles to one assailant who has been killing since 1985. Police said they have no known suspect because the DNA does not match any sample in national crime databases.

One victim survived an attack in 1988, giving police the only description they have of the suspect: a black man in his 30s driving an orange Ford Pinto.

The last killing in the series occurred in January 2007 with the discovery of 25-year-old Janecia Peters' body. DNA tests showed she was killed by the same assailant as the others.

Celine Dion's Special Flight Service

EmailI just received this email from someone who didn't leave a reply email address or sign their name. They just dropped it in my contact form.

Your music blog takes way to long to load.

News Tip: Celine Dion got special service this week from Bombardier (I suspect) as they let her avoid the landing fees at Pearson by landing and parking her private jet at Downsview.

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N701WH

When I started this blog almost six years ago, I thought it would be a good idea if I had one page for all entries tagged "music", another page for all entries tagged "toronto maple leafs" and so on. This is my 8023rd entry. Six years ago, I didn't think I'd come close to a number that high.

As a result, the more popular categories have hundreds and hundreds of entries that makes these category pages a mile high. And yes, that can take some time to fully load. I realize it's time for me to introduce pagination to the category pages and I hope to implement this fix some time in September.

As for The Celine, I heard she was in town. I just read a favourable review of her show in the Globe. Bless her little heart. As long as she avoids the AC/DC covers, she's okay in my books. And if Bombardier wants to offer her a special flight from Montreal that avoids Pearson, all the power to her.

But wait, wasn't she all about the Air Canada? Remember this ad...

Some more Birthday snaps

I thought I had taken a snap of the prezzie that sweet Mary gave me but did not have one yesterday - so I took others last night and here they are -

Mary is quite a snap with a needle and makes these super kitchen towels that I am totally in love with!!! She sells them over on etsy under the name Honest Patch - and she gave me one!! There are two styles - this one has the quilted edging all around and the other style has a large quilted border along the bottom. She uses retro fabrics for the squares and heavy flour sacking for the body. Back in the winter she gave Rico one and it gets used and washed all the time and still looks brand new - so they hold up very well. Along with the towel she stitched up a two sided key chain - one side has the Workbasket Quaker Porcupine and the other side -

-has my initials and a raspberry - Mary said she did this in honor of my virtual pet Hampton on the blog!! I have now replaced my broken work key ring for this great one!!!
Thank you so much Mary!!!

I also received yesterday a prezzie from a friend in Paris
- she knows I like minty things and sent me some French mints -

The "Betises de Cambrai" I have had before and really like but the others are new and very good also!! Thank you Isabelle!

I finally took a snap of the platter I picked up this weekend -

I really like it - and for $4.49 you just can't beat the price!!! It is in perfect condition and full sized - so it can take the Turkasaurus-maximus that I will be cooking this year - I think I am going to have a crowd of folks over!!! Thanksgiving is one of my favorite Holidays - no pressure just a laid back parade and dinner!!!

There is a new smallish Farmers Market over at grove and Divisadero on Sundays that we have been going to...this past Sunday we picked up some really gorgeous Sun Flowers
- here is a snap of the ones on the table now -

They really say fall and last so very long!!

I worked on a finished up the grass on square 8 of VoHRH -

I will start to work on the mill pond tonight.

Last night the movie was "His Kind of Woman" - 1951 starring Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell - I really enjoyed this film - the whole look of the film was great from the sets and costumes to the lighting and camera angles. It did seem that Jane Russell was there to only wear cleavage revealing outfits with strategically placed brooches and to deliver her great one liners and off the cuff remarks!!! She was gorgeous don't get me wrong but I would think on a vacation that everything you would bring would not have your bosom on the brink of a bodice ripper??? I may be wrong - the character she payed was on the hunt for a rich husband and what better bait??? I would recommend this movie for many reason's - snappy dialogue, great sets, great actors including and Vincent Price
and the ever present danger of "will that brooch hold or not!!!"

Thanks for stopping by!!

Take care,
edgar

Scouting The Pac: Week 1

A quick look around the Pac-10 Weekend...a bunch of blowouts, sure, but it was all made up for with that AMAZING UCLA/Tennessee game.

Arizona put up 70 points on Idaho, who might be the worst team in the FBS this season. It's the biggest margin of victory for the Wildcats in 87 years; in 1921, UA beat the Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy 74-0. That school, of course, is now the fine institution known as UTEP, but no word whether Jordan Palmer was the QB in that game. The game was delayed by an hour by lightning and the field was cleared, literally, as UA was lining up to kick off.

California picked up a nice season opening win over Michigan State when backup RB Shane Vereen busted the Spartan run defense for an 81-yard game winning scamper. Unfortunately for Bear Nation, their calls for a Gold Out were completely unheeded, and I laughed heartily when I saw the entire student section in dark blue shirts. The new Cal 3-4 needs some work though. No one should give up 31 to Michigan State.

Oregon seems to have a problem: God doesn't want anyone to play quarterback for the Ducks. Justin Roper goes down with a concussion, but JuCo transfer Jeremiah Masoli stepped in and led the Ducks to a 44-10 win over hapless Washington. Very moving story from the game as well: Patrick Chung wore the late's #29 jersey with no nameplate on it and a defensive player will wear it every week of the season.

Oregon State has a quarterback problem as well...this one being that their starter just straight up is no good. Two good news pieces though for the Beavers: Jacquizz Rodgers is going to be a stud of a running back and Sean Canfield started throwing again. 0-2 for the Beavers is at least a 95% possibility having to go to Penn State next week.

Stanford has found a running game with Toby Gerhart, but we'll see how he looks against an experienced front seven, something that Oregon State didn't come to Palo Alto with. However, it was still "Dress Like Your Favorite Empty Seat" night at Stanford Stadium. Looks like Cardinal fans are already cashing in on the Gridiron Guarantee.

UCLA could be 2008's Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Kevin Craft threw four AWFUL interceptions in the first half and Rick Neuhiesel wouldn't even commit to him coming out to play the 2nd half with Ho-Rowe. He obviously drank his good quarterback juice during the break as he led the Bruins to a stunning comeback and a 27-24 OT win over #18 Tennessee. The unsung heroes were the members of the youthful Bruins front seven.

USC trashed on Virginia...who might actually be worse than Duke in the ACC this season. Mark Sanchez looked super comfortable under center for the Trojans and Joe McKnight showed almost no ill effects from the injury that slowed him down during camp. They've got a week off to prepare for their September 13 showdown with USC at the Coliseum. One thing is certain: USC's defense is incredibly fast.

Washington might actually eclipse Washington State as the worst team in the conference. They have NO weapons around Jake Locker and it showed in a 44-10 drubbing at Autzen. It's their fifth straight loss to the Ducks. It should be the start of Tyrone Willingham's last season in Seattle.

Speaking of Washington State, they didn't look much better in losing to Oklahoma State, but at least Brandon Gibson is still a stud. It'll be a long season for Paul Wulff in the Palouse. Someone needs to explain to me what "It was somber, not happy, but at the same time hopeful" means. Maybe they can put that on the cover of the media guide as WSU's slogan for 2008.

OMG - It's Almost Here!

gg9108.jpgWe can't wait to find out what Serena, Blair, Nate, Chuck, Dan and Jenny are getting into (or rather, whose pants they're getting into!) - and it's only a few hours away. We know that it takes place in the Hamptons, and that there are some fresh new faces, such as Lydia Hearst (who plays Amelia), but we're not sure who will find love, and who will be out for revenge. Be sure to catch the season two premiere on 8/7c on! Who do you think is going to knock boots? Or are you more excited to see what kind of boots they're wearing? After all, GG does have a killer wardrobe!
